08.03.2011 From Dawn till Dusk: A Day in the Life of a Roma Scrap Collector
In an effort to support his nine member family, Rahim Serif works eleven hours long on his feet, rain or shine, going from one garbage container to the next, all in the hopes of finding potentially recyclable material. Some days he scours local land dumps; other days he visits industrial complexes. Not everyday is the same, but one thing is for certain: everyday he exposes himself to a myraid of infectious diseases and other forms of bacteria. On average, Rahim traverses over 80 kilometers on his horse-drawn wagon during his daily search for iron, tin, aluminum, copper, brass, batteries and paper. For generations, Rahim's forefathers have endured a similar fate, with no recourse or alternative, trapped in a vicious circle. Such is the everyday plight of some of the 8,000 estimated Romani families engaged in the collection of secondary raw materials in Serbia.
