Civil Society Advocacy Initiative - Key Achievements
- 244 grants worth a total of over 9 million USD have been provided to civil society organizations (CSOs).
- Trained 668 civic activists and leaders from 173 CSOs, including women and young people, in principles of advocacy and effective citizen engagement.
- Supported 157 CSO advocacy campaigns throughout Serbia, which, among other things, advocated for the adoption of laws and policies at the local and national level, important for Serbia’s democratization and other reform processes, such as: the establishment of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, adoption of the National Youth Strategy, establishment of the Office for CSO/Government Cooperation, the Law on Social Housing, the Law on Personal Data Protection; the Law on Data Confidentiality and the Law on Unified Voter List, as well as establishment of Local Gender, Roma or Environmental Councils in tens of Serbian municipalities and cities.
- Supported the implementation of a nation-wide environmental campaign that cleaned up more than 400 cubic meters of trash in towns and communities across Serbia. The Oplaneti se! / Get with the Planet! Campaign gathered over 300 citizens from 6 towns which participated in a cyclist’s caravan that promoted environmentally-friendly messages via billboards attached to their bicycles. The caravan ended at the EXIT festival, a music festival attended by more than 200,000 people from all over Europe.
- Supporting passage and implementation of the Law on Associations that has increased the efficacy and sustainability of CSOs operating in Serbia. More than 120 legal consultations provided (via phone or e-mail) to CSOs regarding the re-registration process, while more than 1750 CSO representatives participated in seminars organized to inform them about the stipulations of the new Law. To date, more than 1800 organizations have registered or re-registered.
- Establishment of the first ever Business Leaders Forum to encourage increased corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices among leading companies in Serbia. Besides developing a National CSR Strategy, 450 BLF-member companies’ employees volunteered, targeting childcare, social, or environmental issues in 6 different Serbian cities.
- Established the Virtus Awards that recognize outstanding companies in the area of corporate social responsibility which serves to create sustainable partnerships between CSOs and businesses.
